◆ Nationally Designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property ◆In the remote Iya Valley lies the Kazurabashi Bridge, said to hold the sorrowful tale of the defeated Heike clan. Woven from hardy shirokuchi kazura vines weighing about six tons, the bridge stretches 45 meters long, two meters wide, and hangs 14 meters above the river. Once the only way to cross these deep gorges, nowadays it is completely rebuilt every three years.The Iya area, nestled in the steep mountains of Shikoku, is said to have been a hidden refuge for the Heike clan after their defeat at the Battle of Yashima. The Oboke Gorge has unusual geological strata, including a rudaceous schist formation designated as a natural monument. The Yoshino River has cut through the Shikoku Mountains over the ages, eroding crystalline schist into winding gorges with myriad shapes and forms, which almost look like marble statues. Shiozuka Plateau is at the 1,043m altitude and stretches out over both Tokushima and ehime prefectures in 100 hectares (250 acres) area. This roadside station in the beautiful Oboke Gorge was opened in August 2008, and authorized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The building serves as a tourist information center and center to buy souvenirs or enjoy lunch at a cafe with terrace seating. This area has many legends about hobgoblins, so you can also visit the Hobgoblin Museum to see many spooky and fascinating statues and learn more about the legends. For a bit of manga trivia, it is also believed this area is the home town of “Konaki-Jijii”, who appeared in the comic book “Ge-Ge-Ge-no-Kitaro”.On the second floor, there is a Rocks and Gemstones Museum, which exhibits rocks and minerals from the Iya area, and also from around the world. You may request a volunteer guide for the trails or experience accessory craft-making (reservations necessary for groups). For more information, please ask at the Tourist Information Center.

The museum exhibits materials and relics of Heike Clan. This has been a residence of the descendant of Horikawa Naiki, who was a private doctor to the young Emperor Antoku. He has entered into this remote mountain with the remaining member of Heike Clan after they lost the battle and power, and he served as a doctor as well as an oracle in this Iya region, where medicinal herb were plentiful. In its garden stands the 800 years old tree and in the museum building, of which inside remained as then at Edo period, exhibited armor, flag, the ancient document, materials and etc. The lavatory facility for the disabled available.

This is a complex sightseeing facility located at the entrance to Oboke and Iya. An Iya soba noodle shop whose house was rebuilt from an old folk house, an authentic Tokushima Ramen restaurant, a gift shop, an outdoor shop, and a convenience store are on business. The facilities is also complete with features such as a downward slope that leads straight to the river, an observation platform and wooden deck, BBQ house, and dog park. It's also the starting point of the Rafting Koboke Course.

The legend holds that fleeting Heike warriors played their biwa, a Japanese lute, by this waterfall feeling nostalgic for their old city, Kyoto and comforted each other. Mountain stream of River Kurokawa formed ravine, giant rocks and boulders since ancient times. It is renowned spot for viewing fireflies in early summer and enjoying Japanese maple trees in autumn. Konaki-jiji (The Crying Old Man) is a well-known yōkai from Kaminamyo, Yamashiro Town, Miyoshi City. This legendary creature appears in "Yōkai Meii" (Encyclopedia of Yōkai), edited by folklorist Kunio Yanagita, and is also featured in the popular manga series "GeGeGe no Kitarō" by Shigeru Mizuki.In 2001, a stone statue of Konaki-jiji was erected in Fujikawa Valley, where the legend has been passed down, by local volunteers. Since then, the site has attracted visitors throughout the year. Beside the statue stands a stone monument engraved with an explanatory text, the title of which was handwritten by renowned author Natsuhiko Kyogoku.

Mt.Ryugatake rises to the south-western slop side of Mt.Kaina-Yama and midstream of Matsuo river runs through. The sheer precipice is a few hundred meters in height and is over 2km breadth. The spectacular view is colored with fresh green vegetation in spring and with beautiful foliage in autumn. The precipice in sunset reflection is particularly beautiful.

Nokanoikeyama lies at 1,294 meters above sea level. There you will find thick habitat of Hon-Shakunage (non-hybrid rhododendron) in the concave marsh. The residence belongs to the descendant of the retainer of General Masashige Kusunoki, who lived in Northern and Southern Courts era. Furumiya shrine enshrines the Princess Karauta. The legend says that Princess karauta fell in love with the first imperial prince (Ichinomiya-Takayoshi-Shinnou ) of Emperor Godaigo, but died soon after giving birth to a baby in Iya. Later, she came to be worshiped as the Deity for easy and safe delivery and there are many visitors paying homage at a shrine.Every year on the 2nd Sunday in September, the Furumiya shrine festival is held from around noon.

海抜約400mの大任峯に位置し、仁賢天皇の御鎮守とも伝えられる神社です。地元では「ケンミさん」と呼ばれ、古くから人々の信仰を集めてきました。 主祭神(本殿祀)は素戔嗚尊(スサノオノミコト)と応神天皇。創建は仁賢天皇の三庚午年(5世紀末)9月と記されており、詳細は定かではないものの、非常に古い歴史を持っています。本殿は明治21年に、幣殿・拝殿は昭和50年に改築され、平成9年には絵馬殿、平成10年には社務所が新築されました。絵馬殿内には、赤穂浪士をはじめとする奉納絵馬が掲げられ、長年にわたる篤い信仰を今に伝えています。境内山中には、大天狗、山の神、水の神、荒神、不動尊など、多くの神仏が祀られています。また、本殿から山道を10分程歩いた場所には奥社が鎮座し、木々に囲まれた静寂の中、澄んだ空気と神秘的な雰囲気に包まれた特別な空間が広がっています。賢見神社は、邪気退散のご利益で広く知られ、古くから災厄除けや心身の安寧を願う人々が全国から参拝に訪れてきました。現在も、家内安全、病気平癒、身体健康、交通安全、商売繁盛、学業成就、安産、厄除などの御祈祷を毎日受付しており、年間約3万人が訪れています。 ※御祈祷は、社務所へ直接お越しいただくか、電話にてお申し込みください。

Many “Genji Hotaru” (Genji Firefly) flit around Kurokawadani in mid-June every year, where the “Kurokawadani firefly festival” takes place. It is popular to view the fireflies' glow during hot summer nights. (Hotaru inhabits only clean streams.) At festival, there are also fine displays of various crops & vegetables and bonsai, which are on sale along with buckwheat noodle , rice cake and etc.

Fusuma Karakuri is a traditional performing art using a series of picture-painted sliding doors moving crisscross to show different images in turns. Tokuzen Fusuma Karakuri is very rare because it's performed on temporary built outdoor stages. The scale is a size larger than that of Usiroyama's, totally 57 fusumas of 9 sets. You can enjoy it with its local folk songs and dances during the autumn festval period. Miyoshi City designated it as a tangible folk cultural property. (On December 20 in 2012)

Fusuma Karakuri is a traditional performing art using a series of picture-painted sliding doors moving crisscross to show different images in turns. Although this art had once disappeared during the post-war rebuilding and high economic growth of the 20th century, it was performed again with 69 on-fusuma pictures for the first time in 50 years on October, 2005. At present, you can enjoy it with its local folk songs and dances during the autumn festival period. Miyoshi City designated it as a tangible folk cultural property. (In February 2006)

Yamashiro Cho, renown for the magnificence of Oboke and Koboke ravines, and the beauty of Shiozuka plateau lies in the secluded part of Shikoku mountainous region. It was once a home of brave mountain samurai warriors who fought to protect their country border and is also a home of the Yokai (Hobgoblin) legend, which is quite unique in this country. The legend of Yokais has long lived on in everyday's life of local people here, its stories often being associated with the dangerous part of region. So, the hobgoblins or peculiar phenomenon were sometimes said to be a reminder to people to be diligent in general walk of life and also to respect nature and environment. These legends together with effort of local people trying to energize the community through a little unique and fun theme was recognized and acknowledged as “Yokai Heritage” by World Yokai Society in 25th May 2008. This is the second acknowledgement after Sakaiminato City in Tottori Pref. in its history.

Seasonal wild mountain vegetables grown on the property are used as ingredients.
